Painter/Decorator, Glazier, Drywall Finisher

Painter/Decorator

Painter/Decorators select, prepare and apply paints and other coatings to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, bridges, pipelines, towers, dams, machinery and industrial complexes. Coatings—such as paint, organic and inorganic material, sealers and waterproofing materials, fiberglass resins or cloth— are applied to surfaces such as wood, plaster, stucco, stone, gypsum drywall board, concrete, brick or steel. Painter/decorators also prepare surfaces for papers, cottons, muslin, burlap, grass cloth, vinyl wall coverings, epoxy resin combination coverings and cambric-backed wood veneer. In addition, they apply rubber sheeting used for lining tanks. Tools and equipment of the trade include brushes, rollers, spray machines, sandblast units, pressure washers, metallizing and powder-coating equipment, scaffolding, swing stages and specialty tools for fine finishes and wall covering.

Apprenticeship—3 years of on-the-job training with 3 periods of in-school technical training at the training centre in Surrey. Industrial painters can take an additional in-school training session in their fourth year. Upon successful completion, Painter/Decorators receive a provincial Certificate of Apprenticeship, a provincial Certificate of Qualification and the inter-provincial Standard Examination (Red Seal) endorsement.

Glazier

Glaziers fabricate and install all types of glass, aluminum and related products. Glaziers cut, prepare, edge, fabricate, install, remove and repair all types of glass, Plexiglas, structural glass, leaded glass panels and architectural metal products including automatic doors, storefronts, curtain walls, skylights, aluminum-glass entrances, motor vehicles and window systems in all types of buildings. They also fabricate, lay out and install support structures such as flashings, sealants and membranes. Glaziers often work in teams. They should be physically fit and have good communication skills

Drywall Finisher

Drywall finishers finish gypsum wallboard surfaces by taping, spotting, pointing, filling, finishing and sanding joints, angles, internal and external corners and all field surfaces. They apply protective coverings, sealers, decorative finishes and moldings to interior walls and ceilings. Drywall finishers have to be physically fit, capable of taking detailed instruction and comfortable working independently.
