Bricklayer, Tilesetter
Bricklayers work with brick, concrete blocks, structural tile, cinder or gypsum block and pre-cast panels made of brick, cement, tile,
granite, artificial stone, marble, structural tile and terra cotta in the construction, maintenance and repair of walls, floors, arches,
paving, partitions, fireplaces, chimneys, smokestacks and other structures. They also install firebrick and refractors tiles in industrial
kilns, furnaces and bleach plants in pulp mills.
Bricklayer Apprenticeship—4 years with three 5-week periods and one 6-week period of in-school training. Upon successful completion,
bricklayers receive a provincial Certificate of Apprenticeship, a provincial Certificate of Qualification and the inter-provincial
Standard Examination (Red Seal) endorsement.
Tilesetters prepare surfaces for tiling by applying a variety of underbeds such as metal mesh, anchor bolts, cement beds, or scratch coats.
They select, mix, apply and spread mortar, cement, mastic or other adhesives to the tile. They cut and fit tiles to a variety of surfaces and
finish tiles using grout. Tilesetters also lay and set mosaic tiles to create decorative wall, mural and floor designs. Some tilesetters cut,
polish, and install marble and granite and mix, lay, grind, and polish terrazzo surfaces.
Tilesetter Apprenticeship—3 years with three 4-week periods of in-school training. Upon successful completion, tilesetters receive a
provincial Certificate of Apprenticeship, a provincial Certificate of Qualification and the inter-provincial Standard Examination (Red Seal)
endorsement.
