Cement Mason, Operative Plasterer
Cement Mason
Cement Masons work with fresh concrete, patch and repair hardened concrete, apply grouts and either incorporate or apply hardeners,
sealers, curing compounds, epoxies, resins and overlayments in the placing and finishing of concrete floors. Cement Masons employed in the
commercial construction often work from swing stages, scaffolding and mobile lifts.
Cement masons have to be able to endure heavy lifting and working with moderate to heavy tools. Long work days often occur, especially
when slabs are poured because the work must be completed the same day.
Apprenticeship—3 years, including 3,600 hours on-the-job training and in-school technical training. Upon successful completion,
cement masons receive a provincial Certificate of Apprenticeship, a provincial Certificate of Qualification and the inter-provincial
Standard Examination (Red Seal) endorsement.
Operative Plasterer
Operative Plasterers apply coats of plaster and decorative coverings in a variety of materials to interior and exterior walls, building
partitions and ceilings to produce finished or fire-proofed surfaces. They also trowel or apply coats of weatherproofing stucco to building
exteriors, spray acoustic materials, apply textured finishes on walls and ceilings, install insulation board and apply special polymers to
building exteriors. A creative flare is a definite asset because operative plasterers often use a decorative approach to both structures and
finishes.
This trade demands physical strength and an ability to work at heights. Some overtime, weekend and evening work is required in order to
complete projects on time.
